Alejandro Garnacho answered one of Erik ten Hag's questions in Manchester United win vs Leeds

Erik ten Hag’s reaction to Alejandro Garnacho’s goal against Leeds on Sunday was telling.

The late strike was his third senior goal and his first since netting the memorable stoppage-time winner against Fulham in the final Premier League game before the World Cup. Not that he’s been quiet in the meantime.

Garnacho now has five assists for the season, including his tee-up for Marcus Rashford’s derby day winner last month. But the eight days before the trip to Leeds had been a trying short spell for the 18-year-old.

The youngster was double-subbed against Crystal Palace “for the sake of the team”, Ten Hag later said, after Casemiro’s red card. He then squandered a handful of opportunities in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Leeds at Old Trafford before being taken off an hour into his third Premier League start.

It prompted him to post a sorrowful Instagram message, which read: “When you don't understand what is happening, remember that God is in control. I trust the plan you have for me.”

The week leading up to the visit to Elland Road was a test of his mentality. After Wednesday's draw, Ten Hag was very positive about Garnacho but reminded him: "As a striker, you have to at least be on the scoring list, the assist list, key action list to have the right impact.

“And, of course, we expect him also to do the other stuff but the base stuff is also important and if you can't do the others extra then you have to do that, so that is your base function.
