Aldi's most 'closely guarded secret' when it comes to cheap prices

As the cost of living continues to rise, households are doing everything they can to keep costs at a minimum and this includes keeping a close eye on what gets put in the trolley during the weekly food shop.

Shoppers are now paying almost 9.8% more for staple milk, cheese and eggs due to the increased cost of production and inflation, according to the latest figures published by the Office for National Statistics. In the last 12 months food has increased and is a big factor behind the rising inflation rate, with prices going up by an average of 9.4% year-on-year.

It's no surprise that the food price hikes has forced many shoppers to reconsider where they do their weekly food shop, and it has been revealed that the majority of shoppers rely on Aldi for just that. In line with the rising cost of living, Britsuperstore analysed forum data to find which supermarket in the UK is the cheapest and best quality for own brand products.

Using data from Mumsnet’s "closely guarded secret" forum, the results were gathered by analysing each forum post and highlighting the product types and supermarkets referenced. Within the survey Aldi was voted the most popular supermarket for less expensive own brand products, with over 51% of forum comments referencing the shop as stocking the most 'closely guarded secret' supermarket buys.

Coming in next, was Lidl with 23.57% of forum shoppers, but it was the supermarket that came in third that is probably the most surprising. Around 11.78% of shopper's on the forum said they go to Sainsbury's for its own brand products.
