Albion Rovers boss targets Elgin City win to kick-start League Two survival fight

Sandy Clark has targeted three points against Elgin City on Saturday as Albion Rovers kick-start their fight to avoid relegation from League Two.

Clark took over from Brian Reid a fortnight ago when a 1-0 defeat against Bonnyrigg Rose left the Coatbridge club rooted to the bottom of the league.

The former St Johnstone and Hamilton Accies gaffer’s first game in charge ended in a 2-1 defeat at Forfar, despite taking the lead through Joe Bevan, but he saw enough in that game to suggest there is hope.

And he’s targeted three points at Cliftonhill on Saturday that would take them off the foot and above their visitors on goal-difference, with Stirling Albion’s 1-0 win over Elgin on Tuesday helping out.

Clark said: “We’re in a horrible situation at the bottom of the league, but it’s in our own hands, that’s the most important thing – to make sure we pick up enough points to avoid the play-off situation.

“We have to double down and work hard, and Saturday’s game becomes absolutely massive, at home to Elgin.

“We were hoping that Stirling Albion would beat Elgin on Tuesday, which would make the scenario that if we can beat them on Saturday, we’d go above them.

“It’s one game at a time, but all five remaining games are going to be important, and it’s imperative that we pick up points.

“Looking at the guys, their attitude and the way they’re capable of playing, there’s every chance they can do it.

“I have no doubt they can do it, but we have to do our talking on the park, and pick up points.”

Having seen Rovers at close quarters, Clark is confident there is enough talent there to stay in the division.
