Albian Ajeti Celtic transfer exit chance emerges as Basel consider move for 'prodigal son' but there's one major hurdle

Albian Ajeti’s former club Basel are reportedly interested in ending the Celtic flop’s Parkhead hell but his wages could prove a stumbling block.

The 26-year-old started his career at the Swiss side where he came through the youth ranks and had two stints in the first team which sandwiched spells at FC Augsburg and St Gallen before he moved to West Ham United in an £8million deal. But it didn’t work out for the strike in London and the Hammers cut their losses after just one season, with Neil Lennon taking him to Parkhead in a £5m move.

But Ajeti has had a miserable time in the east end of Glasgow and was sent out on loan to Sturm Graz last season. It was reported last month that Ajeti had rejected the offer of part of his final year being paid up by Celtic, similar to fellow flop Vasilis Barkas, in a bid to offload him. Now, Swiss outlet Blick report that Basel are “toying” with the idea of making a move to take him back St. Jakob-Park but that they couldn’t pay his reported £18,000-a-week wage.

FC Basel suffered a Europa Conference League shocker as they crashed out at the hands of Kazakhstan outfit Tobol Kostanay. The Swiss side’s majority shareholder is former player David Degen who played alongside Ajeti and is said to be ken to make the move happen and wants more players who understands he club, having recently brought Dominik Schmid back.

The report states: “The people of Basel are toying with the idea of bringing their prodigal son back. In 96 games for Basel, Ajeti has scored 43 goals. In 2018 he became the top scorer in the Super League. Since leaving FCB, however, Ajeti has not done much. He only played 399 minutes at West Ham, and the striker is still considered one of the biggest transfer flops in club
