Alan Thompson 'devastated' by Celtic vs Man Utd legends match snub as he takes sarcastic dig at 'serial winners'

Alan Thompson says he was 'devastated' not to get a call from Celtic to feature in the legends match at Old Trafford - and took a sarcastic potshot at some of the 'serial winners' who did play.

A Hoops legends select beat Manchester United on penalties with Gary Hooper cancelling out Wayne Rooney's opener, before five perfect spot-kicks saw Darren O'Dea come away the hero. As ever with these charity games, the term 'legend' was used fast and loose in some cases - the likes of Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Barry Robson were good Celtic players in their day but you'd struggle to find a fan who would use that term to describe them.

One man who probably does fall into the 'legendary' category is four-time title-winner Thompson, who was a key figure of the golden era under Martin O'Neill and Gordon Strachan in the early 2000s, scoring 51 goals across 227 games from midfield.

And the 50-year-old let the club know it on Sunday night. Writing on his X account, Thompson said: "Devastated when you don’t get invited to Celtic legends game vs Man Utd at Old Trafford but hey ho, life goes on. Must have some serial winners to pick from!!!"
