Alan Shearer: The PL's 10 most expensive transfers adjusted for inflation

Alan Shearer is arguably Newcastle United‘s greatest ever player.

The striker-turned-pundit joined his local club in the summer of 1996 from Blackburn Rovers and went on to score a ridiculous number of goals.

In his 405 games across all competitions with the Magpies, Shearer found the back of the net a whopping 206 times, with 148 of the goals coming in Premier League action.

It’s a real shame that he never won a trophy with Newcastle, but there’s no denying that the transfer was an absolute masterstroke.

Shearer certainly didn’t come cheap, though. He cost £15 million, which in 1996 was a world-record fee.

And when that figure is adjusted for inflation, the transfer is the most expensive in Premier League history.

The folks over at The Athletic have used a calculator created by football finance expert Kieran Maguire and his colleague Jason Laws at the University of Liverpool to work out how much Shearer’s move to Newcastle would cost if it happened today.

They’ve also provided the top 10 most expensive transfers in Premier League history after implementing the complex calculations, which are based on revenue increases over time.

So, let’s take a look at the results…

10. Fernando Torres (Liverpool to Chelsea) – £112.3 million

9. Dennis Bergkamp (Inter Milan to Arsenal) – £117.3 million

8. Dwight Yorke (Aston Villa to Manchester United) – £118.2 million

7. Wayne Rooney (Everton to Manchester United) – £118.6 million

6. Rio Ferdinand (West Ham United to Leeds United) – £124.9 million

5. Paul Pogba (Juventus to Manchester United) – £126 million

4. Rio Ferdinand (Leeds United to Manchester United) – £132.5 million

3. Stan Collymore (Nottingham Forest to Liverpool) – £132.9 million

2. Juan Sebastian Veron (Lazio to Manchester
