Kane, Shearer, Rooney: The Englishman with the best goals-per-game record in each year

Harry Kane is one of the greatest strikers England has ever produced.

Throughout the course of his career at the highest level, the Tottenham Hotspur striker has found the back of the net for fun.

Kane will soon usurp Wayne Rooney as England’s record scorer and he’s in with a very good chance of surpassing Alan Shearer‘s haul of 260 Premier League goals.

To further highlight the absurdity of Kane’s goalscoring in recent years, we’ve decided to work out the English player with the best goals-per-game record in each completed year of the 21st century.

Kane’s dominance from 2015 onwards is quite scary, although he’s far from the only player to finish as top dog on more than one occasion.

All the stats below have been sourced from Transfermarkt and only players who scored 10+ goals in the year were considered for selection.

Kane takes the gold medal in six (yes, SIX) out of the 22 completed years this century, with his record of 1.07 goals per game in 2017 far and away the best of the bunch.

Rooney (x3), Owen (x2), Lampard (x2), Defoe (x2) and Sturridge (x2) are the other players to feature on the list more than once.

At the time of writing, Kane currently has the third-best goals-per-game record among English players in 2022.
