Alan Shearer fires 'lucky' Man City jibe after Newcastle FA Cup clash

Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on Manchester City’s FA Cup win over Newcastle United.

City booked another trip to Wembley as they advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday. Two deflected goals from Bernardo Silva saw Pep Guardiola’s side cruise through to the next round at Newcastle’s expense as the team moved a step closer to retaining the famous trophy.

The result meant Newcastle’s wait for their first major trophy since 1955 continues. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer felt that City’s goals were fortunate to find their way past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka but conceded that the Blues were the much stronger team at the Etihad Stadium.

“Despite the two lucky goals, they were much the better team,” Shearer told BBC Sport. “I think the simple thing is that they were better than Newcastle, and are better than Newcastle in every position.

“That is where Newcastle want to get to, that is the standard. They tried. No problem with the attitude, but they just lacked that bit of quality in terms of the opposition and who they are against.”

From City’s perspective, the victory extended the club’s unbeaten home record this season to 20 matches and brought the team a step closer to winning a possible quintuple. Former City defender Micah Richards shared his thoughts on the team’s dominant victory over Eddie Howe’s side.
