Alan Shearer explains what Manchester United need to improve to reach top four

Alan Shearer is adamant Manchester United forwards need to start chipping in with goals if the Reds are to reach the top four this season.

United secured a 2-1 victory against Sheffield United on Saturday night to record back-to-back Premier League victories. After a slow start, Erik ten Hag's side took the lead thanks to Scott McTominay's third strike in two matches.

The Scotland soon went from hero to zero six minutes later when he was adjudged to have handled a Blades cross in the area. Oli McBurnie fired home the resulting penalty. United played better in the second half and won the game in the 77th minute thanks to Diogo Dalot's long-range drive but in his Match of the Day post-match analysis, Shearer was concerned the victory may paper over some cracks in the forward line.

He explained: "The manager was right, you have got to find a way to win and they certainly did that. But you feel as though, if they want to get in and around the top four, one thing has to change and that is the forwards have to chip in more with goals.

"They certainly created the chances today and they should have put the ball in the back of the net more than they did. [Marcus] Rashford, [Rasmus] Hojlund, Antony, [Alejandro] Garnacho, [Anthony] Martial, you have got to ask for more, you have got to demand more when you are getting into these positions.

"Working the ball and passing the way they did, that was really good play until they are in the six-yard box when that should be in the back of the net. There is only one goal from that list which I have just read out and that is Rashford.
