Airdrie striker hopes history repeats itself after getting off the mark in Thistle win

Calum Gallagher hopes history repeats itself and he goes on to have a fruitful season, having bagged his first goal of the campaign.

The striker bulleted a header past David Mitchell from Craig Watson’s inviting cross to put Airdrie 2-1 up against Partick Thistle on Saturday and they held on for their first Championship win.

Gal says he scored at the same point last season, and went on net 23 goals, claiming the PFA League One Player of the Year in the process.

The 28-year-old said: “It’s a good way to get my first goal.

“It always seems to be the toughest one, the first of the season, getting off the mark, and traditionally or historically I’ve always been a bit of a slow starter.

“It was the same fixture, the second league game of the campaign that I broke the deadlock last year and went on to have a really successful season.

“I’m hoping that there’s a wee bit of a trend, or something I can take from it and take it into the coming weeks and fixtures.”

Gallagher missed a gilt-edged chance in eight minutes, practically blasting past an open goal after good play by captain Adam Frizzell to set him up, but says he would be an emotional wreck if he let that sort of thing get to him.

He explained: “I missed a great chance at Dunfermline last week and I should certainly do better with the first opportunity against Thistle – Frizz puts a great ball across goal early on, and it possibly came too early for me.

“But the longer I’ve been in the game the easier it has become to shake these misses off.

“I don’t think you can play at this level as a striker for the length of time that I’ve done it and let misses get to you – you wouldn’t have a career otherwise!.
