Airdrie striker Ben Wilson aims to rediscover scoring touch in Hamilton Accies clash

Ben Wilson aims to score the goals that kick-start Airdrie’s season again, and hopes that starts in Saturday’s Lanarkshire derby at Hamilton Accies.

The 22-year-old Northern Irish striker burst onto the scene with six goals in his first four games in the Premier Sports Cup group stages, but has drawn a blank in his last four.

That was especially frustrating, with an apparently wrongly disallowed goal that would have had Airdrie 1-1 at home to Queen’s Park in Saturday’s 2-0 Championship defeat. He also hit the post with an effort in the second half.

Wilson says goals will come again, but hopes sooner rather than later. The former Cliftonville hit man said: “That’s the life of a striker. When it’s all going well and the goals are flying in, everything’s brilliant.

“It’s a wee bit of a difficult patch for the team just now, and I’m just looking to put the ball in the back of the net for the boys and kick-start us again.

“Hamilton’s the next game, it’s a good one to get stuck into. It’s our next focus, we’ll get ready for that, and hopefully we can go there and get a result.”

Wilson popped up at the back post to net for Airdrie in 21 minutes of Saturday’s New Broomfield clash, only to fall foul of an offside flag.

Queen’s Park raced up the park two minutes later to score their clincher through Zak Rudden, adding to Jack Turner’s earlier strike, and the points were heading back to Lesser Hampden.

Wilson said: “It was difficult. I’ve seen it back and I’m onside, but that can’t be changed now. All I can do is look forward, and make it right in the next game.
