Airdrie star is happy his 'tasty' strike hit the net instead of McDonald's at Alloa

Airdrie hero Craig Watson hit a delicious strike to fire the Diamonds up to third in League One – then admitted he was relieved his effort didn’t end up in the McDonald’s outside Alloa’s Indodrill Stadium.

The defender netted the only goal of the game in Clackmannanshire to help Airdrie leapfrog their rivals in the table and boost their play-off hopes going into the final five games of the campaign.

He fired home from the edge of the box just before half-time to grab his second goal in three games, and make it four wins on the spin for Rhys McCabe’s side.

Watson said: “It was a nice connection. It fell to me nicely at the outside of the box and I’ve just caught it really well.

“I don’t think I’ve ever caught a ball as sweet as that.

“Thankfully, Gabby [McGill] has managed to dive out of the way of it.

“It was either hitting the top corner or hitting the McDonald’s behind the stadium so, thankfully, it found the top corner.

“I’ve been good at picking up a few goals this season and it is one of the advantages of being in that right-back area, that I do get up the pitch a lot more than I would at centre-back.

“It’s two in three games but, more importantly, we’ve got a win and a clean sheet. We’ve not had a problem scoring goals this season, it’s been at the other end we’ve not been as good.

“Now we have got a bit of consistency with clean sheets, or only one goal conceded, so hopefully we can keep that going, and the quality we have got up top will pay off.”

Airdrie had scored 18 goals in their last three games going into the clash, but Watson insisted they were never going to go on a scoring spree against Brian Rice’s side.

He added: “We can’t score six or seven every week and it definitely won’t happen when we are playing
