Airdrie skipper admits "I was drunk" as Diamonds tattoo on Benidorm trip marks promotion

Airdrieonians player-assistant boss Callum Fordyce has revealed he marked the club's promotion to the Championship with a Diamond tattoo on a 'drunken night out' in Benidorm - and hopes to add another inking by the end of next season.

The Diamonds defender has told how he and the squad were a bit worse for wear on a team holiday when the notion took hold of him to mark the club's play-off success over Hamilton Accies.

Despite a squad of 12 on a night out during the trip to Spain, club captain Fordyce was the only one brave enough to get inked.

Now, a small red Diamond on his left ankle acknowledges the club's first promotion to the second tier for a decade.

And as the team returned to pre-season training yesterday to start preparation for the campaign in the second tier, 30-year-old Fordyce said: "There were a good few of us who went to Benidorm after we got promoted and, look, I was wrecked one night, simple as that.

"So I said to the boys, do any of you want a tattoo?

"It was quite funny because there were 12 of us and none of them had tattoos - and none of them were willing to have their first tattoo being a Diamond!

"Like I say, I was drunk and I thought it would be a good laugh, so I went and got the tattoo next to my ankle.

"It's a good memory for me and we are all laughing about it.

"It is something boys do when they are away, but it means something to me and it was good to get it.

"When I first signed for the club, that was maybe five years ago now, it was my aim to get us promoted and we've managed to do that.

"Now it is about putting a statement out that we are there to stay now and hopefully kick on.

"It is going to be a harder league but one we are relishing.

"Fingers crossed I can get one on the other side
