Airdrie Scottish Cup centenary celebrated, with Sir Alex Ferguson dinner looming

Airdrie on Saturday marked the centenary of their historic Scottish Cup win.

The Broomfield club beat Hibs 2-0 in the final at Ibrox Stadium on April 19, 1924, with a double from Willie Russell, to lift the only major trophy in the club's history.

Airdrie set up a dedicated social media page called Airdrieonians 1924 Tweets to go through the competition in 'live tweets' as they lifted the famous old trophy.

There is also a centenary dinner taking place at the Westerwood Hotel in Cumbernauld on Sunday, April 28, featuring speeches from Manchester United and Scotland legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who is guest of honour, and former grade one referee Hugh Dallas.

The evening has long since sold out.

Airdrie announced their intentions to celebrate the anniversary back in January when they said: "Fans will be aware that the competition has a significant place in Diamonds history, and this year we celebrate a very special centenary."

The Diamonds started their tournament with a 2-1 win over Greenock Morton in the first round, ousted St Johnstone and Motherwell 4-0 and 5-0, respectively, in rounds two and three, to set up a quarter-final against Ayr United.

After 1-1, 0-0 and 1-1 draws, Airdrie eventually progressed with a 1-0 win in a third replay.

Airdrie then beat Falkirk 2-1 in their semi-final, while Hibs eventually eliminated Aberdeen with 1-0 replay win.

Airdrie's triumphant final team was led by manager Willie Orr and featured Jock Ewart, Alex Dick, George McQueen, Tom Preston, Jock McDougall, Bob Bennie, James Reid, Willie Russell, Hughie Gallacher, Bob McPhail and Jimmy Somerville.

During the evening, club record goal-scorer Calum Gallagher will be inducted into Airdrie's Hall of Fame.
