Airdrie's cup exit to East Kilbride subject of alleged racist incident targeting Kilby ace

East Kilbride Football Club say they are in dialogue with Airdrieonians regarding a racist incident involving Kilby player Joao Balde during Saturday's SPFL Trust Trophy tie.

The Lowland League side stunned the Diamonds on Saturday by knocking the current holders out on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the last 16 tie.

But it is claimed their success has been soured by racist comments from the home section aimed at Kilby's Portuguese winger. The incident happened at the end of the match and it is understood the alleged comments were made in front of the full East Kilbride squad and their coaching staff after the final whistle.

The club statement posted on social media read: "East Kilbride Football Club is aware of an incident involving our player, Joao Balde, that occured during Saturday's match.

"We are currently in dialogue with Airdrie Football Club, who have initiated an investigation into this matter.

"We trust that Airdrie will address this situation appropriately and thoroughly.

"Our thoughts remain with Joao, who was exceptional on Saturday."

EK boss Mick Kennedy posted on his X account: "No place for this in society let alone football, I’m sure Airdrie FC will investigate and take action against the individual involved. Also astonishing the ref books one of our players for his defence of his team mate."

Airdrie are yet to make any official statement themselves. Lanarkshire Live Sport has contacted the club for comment.
