Airdrie's best is still to come, says No.2 ahead of Queen's Park Friday night test

Airdrie assistant boss Callum Fordyce says the club can be pleased with their start to the Championship season so far and says the best is yet to come from the newly-promoted side.

The Diamonds have won four and lost four since winning promotion from League One through the play-offs and host Queen’s Park under the lights at New Broomfield on Friday night, looking to end the first quarter of the campaign with a win.

There have been wins over Partick, Inverness, Raith and Morton, along with defeats to Dundee United, Dunfermline, Ayr and Arbroath – the latter of which ended in a painful 4-0 loss away from home with 10 men.

Sitting in fifth place and six points off of leaders Dundee United, Fordyce feels that is a good start in their first season back in the second tier, and believes things will only get better as the campaign continues if they can find some consistency.

The defender said: “I think for anyone who has just been promoted, if you’ve won 50 per cent of your games and you are sitting fifth in the league, six points off the top, you’d say that isn’t a bad start, is it?

“It is just about learning and improving as a playing staff, as a coaching staff and keep trying to progress.

“The most frustrating thing for us so far, is that we feel that we’ve given teams points.

“The only game we’ve been well beaten in is the Arbroath game - and I can’t see us playing as bad as that again.

“The rest have been very close. It’s come down to small margins. Things not quite falling for us and things falling for the opposition.

“After the first quarter, if we are still six points off the top or something like that, we would see that as a good start.
