Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe: No reason why we won't win Championship title

Airdrie player-boss Rhys McCabe insist there is 'no reason why' his side won't win the league this season.

The Diamonds were promoted to the Championship last term after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Hamilton Accies in the play-off final in May.

And McCabe believes his side are capable of making it back-to-back promotions and sealing a place in the Premiership next season.

The former Rangers man has been at the helm for 18 months and became the youngster manager in British football when he took the reins in May 2022 at the age of 29 years old.

He has high expectations for his side and has seen them give leaders Dundee United a close game at Tannadice last month in a 2-0 defeat, whilst beating Raith Rovers, Inverness Caley Thistle, Partick Thistle and Morton.

They are looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at home to Ayr United last time out and ahead of tomorrow night's TV clash with Queen's Park, he told the BBC he believes his team - who currently sit fifth with four wins and four defeats - could go all the way and lift the title.

McCabe said: "I don't want to come across as arrogant but there is no reason why we won't win the league.

""We go up to Dundee United and we have three 18-year-olds playing in midfield, we dominate possession, unlucky with a few chances, possibly a bit of experience late on - they score in the 92nd minute or something to make it 2-0.

"We were well in that game at Tannadice with a young squad. They will take a lot of experience from that.

"We have beaten Partick, we have beaten Inverness, we have beaten Raith - who were sitting top at the time - so we have played good, established teams.
