Air India plane crash LIVE tributes as victims named after more than 240 people killed

Tributes are pouring in as the identities of the people who lost their lives in the Air India Plane crash have been revealed. More than 240 people are confirmed to have died after a Gatwick Airport-bound plane crashed in a fireball in India on Thursday (June 12).

The Air India Flight 171 came down shortly after its take-off from Ahmedabad Airport. The airline has confirmed that 241 of the 242 people on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner were killed.

One passenger, a British man, survived the crash. Footage from the crash shows the plane coming down in the residential area of Meghani Nagar area at 1.38pm local time, just minutes after take-off. A huge fireball erupts from the aircraft as thick plumes of smoke billow up from the site of the crash.

It is not yet clear how many people were killed on the ground, but at least eight people who were not on the Air India plane are believed to have died, a senior health official in Ahmedabad told the BBC.

Four of the victims were medical students who were living in one of the buildings where the plane crashed, she said. The other four were relatives of other students who were living in the hostel.

Ahmedabad's police chief GS Malik previously said it was highly likely that there were also casualties on the ground where the plane crashed, warning that "some locals" would have died.

Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information. Those calling from outside India can call on +91 8062779200."

The FCDO said any British nationals requiring consular assistance, or who have concerns about family or friends, should call 020 7008 5000.
