After 65 years, a Mancunian staple has closed for good

A dry cleaners which served Mancs in the heart of town for more than six decades has closed down.

Granada Dry Cleaners opened on Bridge Street, opposite the Freemasons Hall, in 1958. However, a planning application has revealed that the business has closed down and will be converted into a ‘bar/eatery’.

The Manchester Evening News has visited the premises, and it appears that the dry cleaning operation is long gone. No cleaning equipment was visible from the street.

Now, however, it appears Ian Maugham is hoping to convert the premises to a hospitality firm. That will involve some changes to the appearance of the shop, a design and access statement for the application said.

“The frontage of the existing shop front is to change, the left hand side entrance door will be removed,” it explained. “New aluminium window framing is to be proposed along two large bays separated by an existing column.

“The new windows style will be shuttered/openable, so users of the establishment can enjoy their drink/food, while enjoying watching the world passing by, similar to many bars in the vicinity.”

The basement would be converted into a kitchen, toilets, and staff quarters. The ground floor will be open to the public, with the first and second floor areas set up as offices and a staff room. It’s hoped the business will operate from 10am to 4am.
