AFCON 2023: South African club backs Nwabali, Nigeria to beat Bafana Bafana

Stanley Nwabali.

South African club Chippa United are solidly behind their goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali and his country, Nigeria, as they face the Bafana Bafana in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The two countries will do battle on Wednesday evening at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake, in Ivory Coast with a place in the final of AFCON 2023 up for grabs.

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Nwabali, plays for Chippa United and the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) club have surprisingly lent their support to their player against their country.

Chippa United, in a shock statement signed by chairman, Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi, are very much happy with the level of international attention Nwabali’s success at the 2023 AFCON has generated.

“With Stanley’s rising profile and international attention it brings to Chippa United FC, the benefits have been nothing but positive,” the chairman was quoted as saying.

“Therefore, I and Chippa United FC stand behind our player Stanley Nwabali and the Nigerian Super Eagles on Wednesday against South Africa Bafana Bafana. We wish the Super Eagles all the best.”

Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has started Nwabali in goal at AFCON 2023 ahead of his long-time first-choice keeper, Francis Uzoho, and the Portuguese tactician has been rewarded handsomely for taking that decision.

Nwabali has so far kept four consecutive clean sheets in the five games Nigeria have played at the tournament, conceding only one goal when the Super Eagles played out to a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their group A opener on January 14.
