Adrien Rabiot is not the player Manchester United want him to be

Manchester United fans were keen to watch PSV play Monaco in the third qualifying round of the Champions League playoffs on Tuesday. The fanbase had not become Dutch or French football aficionados, merely the game had 'consequences' for United.

The Manchester Evening News revealed on Monday that United had agreed a fee in principle with Juventus for Adrien Rabiot, but reports elsewhere soon claimed the player was waiting to see whether Monaco qualified for the Champions League before making a decision on his future. The prospect of United fighting Monaco for a player is an indictment of where the club is currently at.

Monaco were defeated by PSV and supporters on social media celebrated their exit. The celebrations were muted, but United fans are taking all they can get at the moment, as this summer has become increasingly farcical after a promising start with Erik ten Hag.

It is understood the fee United have agreed with Juventus is £15million rising to £20m, but that the club still need to negotiate personal terms with the player's agent — his mother. Rabiot's mum Veronique is known for her abrasive approach.

Although Frenkie de Jong has been United's priority target all summer, the player's future remains uncertain due to the deferred wage he accepted two years ago. United have signed Christian Eriksen but Ten Hag wants another midfielder at Old Trafford.

The De Jong transfer saga has gone on for months. It has become tedious and Barcelona's reputation has been dragged into the mud, albeit they don't seem to care, which isn't very fitting of their famous motto: 'Mes que un club'.
