'Absolutely outstanding' Lisandro Martinez sent warning ahead of Manchester United vs Brighton

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has been warned that the strikers he will face in the Premier League will be different to the ones who lined up against him in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

The friendly marked the Argentine’s debut for his new club, and he impressed onlookers with his competent play. Martinez is expected to partner Harry Maguire for United’s opening Premier League clash with Brighton on Sunday.

He already understands Erik ten Hag’s style of play having worked under him at Ajax for three years. He was named the club’s Player of the Year last season as he lifted his second Eredivisie title with the new United boss.

Former United centre-half David May praised Martinez for a successful debut, branding it “a doddle for him”. But he warned that he should expect a sterner test once the league season begins.

Speaking to in-house media, he said: “Don’t get me wrong, it’ll be different opposition playing in the Premier League. But you can only play against who’s in front of you, or against you, and from what I saw of him (vs Rayo Vallecano) he was absolutely outstanding.”
