Aberdeen cup shock a feat Mick Kennedy would love to emulate at East Kilbride

East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy has set his sights on replicating his Scottish Cup giant-killing feat at Darvel, as Kilby prepare to enter the competition this weekend.

In January, Kennedy pulled off a cup shock for the ages when his Darvel side sent Premiership side Aberdeen crashing out at the fourth round stage with a 1-0 win, before succumbing to League One Falkirk in the last 16.

This Saturday, he returns to the competition but this time as East Kilbride gaffer, having made the switch from Ayrshire towards the end of last season.

And although he is at a new club, he believes the group he has assembled at East Kilbride are more than capable of matching the achievements of the West of Scotland Football League Premier outfit.

Kennedy, whose EK side kick off at home to Whitehill Welfare in round one, said: “My aim for this season is just the same as it was at Darvel, to go as far as we possibly can.

“There always comes a point in the competition where it gets more challenging and the Championship and Premiership teams come into it, but we will take each game as it comes and try to go as far as we can.

“There is definitely as much quality in this group as there was at Darvel.

“The EK squad is probably a bit younger and have a bit more legs, so there is certainly enough there that we can expect to go as far as possible.

“My aspirations are still the same as they were at Darvel.

“In my first season at Darvel, Arbroath put us out when they were top of the Championship, but last season we obviously put Aberdeen out before losing to Falkirk.

“So I’ll hope to go far again.
