Aberdeen cup draw is a dream for Airdrie skipper, who wants a crack at Premiership giants
Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell admits Aberdeen are a dream draw in the Premier Sports Cup group stages, and is eager for a crack at the Premiership giants.
The Diamonds have a good track record against top-flight teams and count Motherwell, St Mirren, Dundee and St Johnstone amongst their recent scalps.
Frizzell watched the draw on YouTube from a sun lounger in Croatia, and was delighted with how it turned out.
He said: “That’s the one I wanted straight away. I said to my girlfriend before we came out that I wanted Aberdeen. It’s a massive tie, and I think we’ve got them up there, if I’m right with the way the fixtures work.
“It’s brilliant. It’s a great test at the start of the season. The pressure is on Aberdeen, we can go and play our own game.
“It’s not only that they’re from the top league, it’s probably the third or fourth-biggest club in the country.
“I know they had a sticky season, but they’ll have quality international players, and it’s a great way to kick off the season and express ourselves.”
Last season’s group stages saw Airdrie bag wins over Dumbarton, Dundee, Inverness and Bonnyrigg Rose, before bowing out against Premiership side Ross County in the second round, 4-3 after taking them to extra-time.
Frizzell said: “We’ve played a good few Premiership teams over the last couple of years and fared well.
“Hearts were probably a level above in the Scottish Cup, in truth, and that’s the standard that we’ll face again in Aberdeen.
“We’ll need to be bang on it if we’re going to take anything from that.
“We played Dumbarton last season, but we have East Kilbride as well, who are a surprise package, and they’ve been great in the last couple of years, have signed very well, and it will be a good test.
