Aberdeen captaincy update as Dons legend pinpoints star who 'shows the qualities' to take reigns from Celtic hero

Aberdeen legend Willie Miller says Hamilton's Lewis Ferguson has all the traits to become the Dons' new captain - but speculation over his future could hinder him.

Former Celtic captain Scott Brown left his role as Pittodrie skipper this week to focus on potential coaching opportunities.

It leaves the armband at Aberdeen free and a few names have been mentioned for the role.

Ross McCrorie is tied up long-term with manager Jim Goodwin while stalwart Andy Considine is another candidate. But Ferguson has also been mentioned.

The midfielder from Hamilton has been strongly linked with moves away from the Dons - handing in a transfer request last summer - but Miller reckons he has the key traits.

He told Sportsound: "I think you need it to be an outfield player and probably either a deep-lying midfielder or defender. Who is going to be the next one? I don't know.

"I don't know where Andrew Considine is in his recovery. He should be pretty close to coming back. He is a potential candidate.

"Lewis Ferguson, for me, shows the qualities of being a captain but there's so much speculation around Lewis, whether he's going to stay at the club, whether he's not. It's not an easy one."
