Abbey Vale thrash St Cuthbert Wanderers to give manager perfect wedding present

Abbey Vale gave their manager the perfect wedding present on Saturday.

Allan Clark tied the knot while the South of Scotland League Champs were facing St Cuthbert Wanderers.

And in his absence his side hammered in the goals for an 11-1 win in Kirkcudbright – despite conceding first.

Curtiss Wilson, who took the team in the absence of the manager and coaching staff, said: “It was a blast from the past, Kirkcudbright was always a difficult place to go and play.

“It was always 100 miles an hour at the start of a game and it had all the classic features of a difficult away day in Kirkcudbright.

“The wind was blowing, there was a slight hint of rain, the crowd was vocal and, to be fair to the Saints boys, they were right on it from the first whistle.

“They were winning every first and second ball and they deserved to take the lead. They were the better team in the first 10 or 15 minutes.

“After the opening stages, it became a football match, their energy died, and we had far too much quality for them.

“The boys stayed calm when they went a goal down and got back on level terms pretty quickly.

“Once we took the lead the confidence grew in our players, it dissipated in theirs and our quality shone through.”

Saints must have been hoping for a good day when they opened the scoring through Shaun Barclay.

However, Aiden Kerr equalised from the spot before Sam Hughes put Vale in front.

Hughes extended the lead with a goal from Kerr and an own goal putting the visitors 5-1 up at the interval.

There was no let up in the second half as Hughes completed his hat-trick before Kerr completed his own treble.

Adam Kirk scored the eighth with Hughes netting the ninth when Kerr saw his penalty saved.
