Aaron Wan-Bissaka exit could open the door for £17m Diogo Dalot challenger at Manchester United

Diogo Dalot had a solid pre-season under Erik ten Hag but proved against Brentford that he doesn’t possess the quality to either change the game or hold his nerve.

With Cristiano Ronaldo wanting out and Anthony Martial injured, Erik ten Hag is firmly focused on bringing in attacking reinforcements, not to mention his yearning need for a new central midfielder. However, United are at risk of being short on right-back options going forward.

While the arrival of Tyrell Malacia sees them well-stacked on the opposite flank, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s for-sale status means Dalot has little reason to be worried about his place in the team despite United’s dreadful start. Ten Hag has underlined that he requires his players to put in 100 per cent effort during training and matches.

But with no serious competition, there is a danger that Dalot can become lax. Barcelona’s Sergino Dest could be an answer to that.

Reports claim that United attain an interest in the full-back, who could be available for as little as £17million. It’s unlikely the Reds would go in for him without offloading Wan-Bissaka first.

The Englishman could probably be sold for more than what Dest would reportedly cost, making him a cheap replacement. The American loves to get forward and is versatile, possessing the ability to play as a wing-back.

Ten Hag knows this well, having coached the 21-year-old at Ajax. His manoeuvrability and age are perfect for the United boss’ philosophy. Furthermore, Dest chipped in with three assists last season, with Dalot failing to register one.
