AA issues advice to all drivers as Storm Agnes Met Office weather warnings issued

All motorists have been issued advice ahead of Storm Agnes sweeping parts of the UK this week.

A yellow warning for wind has been issued for most of the UK - including the whole of Greater Manchester - from midday on Wednesday September 27 to 7am on Thursday September 28. Some inland areas could see gusts of between 50 and 60mph, while exposed coastal areas could see winds of up to 80mph.

The winds could be 'significantly disruptive' with a small change of injuries and danger to life and a chance of damage to buildings. Power cuts may occur and travel is also expected to be disrupted.

Nick Powell, AA patrol of the year, has warned drivers to watch out for debris on the roads. He said: “Many places across the UK are likely to see strong winds this week and it's very likely trees and debris will be littering the roads. Drivers should be very cautious, especially in rural or woody areas.

"If you see twigs or small branches on the road it could be a sign that a tree has fallen just around the bend, so pay extra attention to the path up ahead.

“As always in windy weather, leave plenty of space behind other vehicles and adjust your speed to suit the conditions, especially when crossing bridges or passing high-sided vehicles. Those on two wheels are especially vulnerable to strong winds, so you should pass these with care."

Nick also warned of delays, advising: "Make sure you bring essentials with you on your journey, even if it is only short, such as warm layers, food and drink and a fully charged mobile phone.
