A young Dumfries team triumphed at Greenacres to retain prestigious title

A team of young curlers from Dumfries have retained the Greenacres U21 title after Team Carson came top in the opening tournament of the Asham U21 slam series at Greenacres Curling Club.

The boys’ section saw Dumfries interest in three teams, in section C it was a full Dumfries side with Team Carson leading the section with three good wins to go through to the knockout stages. Section D had Team Thomson who have Stewart Kyle in their ranks, and they also secured a knockout place with three wins. The final team with Dumfries interest were Team Grant who have drafted in Jack Halliday this season and they also made the semi-finals with a two win, one loss record.

The first semi-final saw Team Carson play Team Grant. The game looked to be heading Team Carson’s way as they led 4-2 after six ends and were sitting shot guarded in the seventh but a great raise from skip Grant tied the scores going into the final end where Team Carson secured the win with the last stone to win 6-4. The other semi-final saw Team Thomson secure a strong 8-2 victory over Team Rutherford to set up a final with Dumfries interest on both sides.

The first three ends of the final saw the teams tied at two shots each. In the fourth, Team Carson scored a two to take the lead, before a well worked four in the fifth put the game out of the reach of Team Thomson with the scores finishing 8-5, securing the title for Team Carson.

The ladies section saw six of the teams have local interest in them. In Section A, Team Tiler found the going tough but they stuck in and returned some good performances. With a record of two wins, three losses, Team Huntly are starting to put some good performances together. Finally in Section A, Team Trotter recorded a three wins,
