A new Rangers transfer model is unveiled as chairman reveals signing spend and fears over Plan A

John Bennett has revealed Rangers are already looking at a transfer bill of £11.5m in 2024 and he wants the club to move away from how they've previously operated.

The Ibrox chief admitted that plans presented to him that showed transfer outgoings matching fees brought in for players were rarely executed and that the board has continually "backstopped" transfer windows to make up the shortfall. He also stressed that loan deals on top of that didn't come for free - such as the one that saw Vaclav Cerny arrive last week - and that the club had to change how it operates when it comes to player trading.

Philippe Clement has to sell before he can add any more new faces to his squad and Bennet has explained why there has to be a change in the trading model. "I've seen talk about the phasing of buying and selling," he said. "If you actually look at the facts, not just in this window but prior to this window, how has Rangers operated? I actually want us to get away from how we've operated but how we've operated is that the board has essentially backstopped each window.

"Yes I've seen player plans in the past where outgoings will match incomings in financial terms. That's your plan A, say. I've rarely seen plan A executed, it always seems we have to backstop it and that's what we've done.

"That's what we've been doing in 2024. If I take the January window and this window, excluding loans, we're double digit commitments in transfer payables. Excluding loans, we're about £11.5million in thus far on transfer payables. That is permanent transfers, not loans. Loans, they're not free. Then with loan fees and agent fees etc. So that's where we are in 2024, about £11.5m spent thus far."
