“A level above League One” – Potential Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday deal touted: The verdict

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly joined the race for Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon (via Patreon), who has claimed that Darren Moore is keen to sign Roofe on a season-long loan. League One rivals Derby County have also been linked.

So would he be a good signing for the Owls? And do they need him?

It’s one that you find yourself quite torn on.

Looking at Sheffield Wednesday’s squad with Michael Smith, Josh Windass and Lee Gregory all on board, do they really need another striker?

You’d say not, with other areas of the squad potentially needing a little bit more TLC.

That being said, Roofe is a player that would be hard to turn down as a supporter.

Just a couple of seasons ago he was impressing in the Championship with Leeds United, whilst since then he’s played for Anderlecht and then won trophies at Rangers.

He’s a level above League One and he would increase Wednesday’s chances of sealing promotion.

What the club need to weigh up is whether it’s worth making the squad top-heavy and upsetting a couple of individuals, for the sake of having a real player on board.

Roofe would be an exceptional signing for Wednesday to make, particularly as it could also weaken a rival’s hand with Derby also showing interest in the forward.

Roofe hasn’t quite nailed down a consistent starting place with Rangers during his time in Scotland but his goal scoring record speaks for itself, having bagged 24 across two seasons.

His goal tally in Scotland averages to 0.84 goals per 90, which would be a huge addition to the Owls if he could replicate that kind of strike rate in League One.
