“A bit of a risk” – Blackburn Rovers considering 50-year-old for managerial appointment: The Verdict

Since Blackburn Rovers announced that Tony Mowbray would be leaving Ewood Park at the end of his contract this season, they have been on the hunt for a new manager. 

According to ESPN journalist Adam Brown, Duncan Ferguson is the latest potential candidate for the job.

The 50-year-old currently works on the coaching staff at Everton but aside from two short stints as interim manager with the Toffees, he has no managerial experience.

Therefore, with Blackburn looking to push further up towards the play-offs next season after finishing six points away from the top six, this could be seen as a more risky appointment.

With that in mind, we asked three writers here at FLW whether they think this is a good potential appointment.

Ned Holmes

This is a bit of a risk for me.

Obviously, Duncan Ferguson has a huge amount of football experience – both as a player and a coach – but his managerial experience is limited to a few spells as caretaker at Everton.

In my eyes, there are better options out there either in big names like Carlos Carvalhal or Daniel Farke or some of the younger coaches coming through in lower EFL divisions.

Ferguson deserves a chance at some point but there’s no denying it’s a risk for Rovers to give him it.

That could pay off but it could equally leave them back in the same position in 12 months’ time.

Adam Jones

This appointment seems like an unnecessary risk to me.
