80% long pass accuracy: The Swansea City man who made a decisive contribution in 2-0 win v West Brom

Joel Piroe has adjusted to an attacking midfield role in recent weeks under Russell Martin with Michael Obafemi becoming Swansea City’s most advanced attacker.

The Dutchman has enjoyed an excellent debut season in the Championship and bagged the opener in Swansea’s much needed 2-0 win at West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening.

Obafemi has taken time to settle in South Wales, but is growing into his role at the Swans’ attacking focal point, allowing Piroe to drift around and find space in offensive areas to hurt the opposition.

His goal return suggests that this alteration was not needed, but looking deeper into his shot locations and where his goals have come from this season, Piroe has thrived in possession outside the penalty area, suiting him to the new attacking midfield role.

The 22-year-old played in a flexible number ten role alongside Jamie Paterson, in behind Obafemi at The Hawthorns and he earned his reward for a tough evening’s work in the 79th minute.

A lung-busting run from impact substitute Olivier Ntcham played a huge role in breaking the deadlock, producing a low cross for Piroe to run onto and fire past Sam Johnstone.

Had Obafemi not been the more advanced player, he would not have been able to use his pace to drag away defenders and create space for Piroe to arrive late in the area to fire home.

Similarly, had Piroe not been operating in his deeper role, it would have been harder for him to time his run as he did, and easier for defenders to track it, and the end result would likely have been different.

Piroe did achieve a long pass accuracy success rate of 80% but his main contribution was the opening goal that got the ball rolling for the Swans to take all three points.
