50-year-old’s eagerness to land Sunderland vacancy outlined

There has been yet another fresh twist in Sunderland’s hunt for a new manager, with the news from BBC journalist Ian Dennis that Neil Lennon is keen to take on the job.

The side have been battling for promotion in League One for most of the year so far but after a humbling 6-0 defeat against Bolton at the weekend, first-team boss Lee Johnson was relieved of his duties at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are currently only one point off an automatic promotion place but with the team having won only one of their last five games in all competitions, it has left them scrambling to ensure they don’t fall out of the promotion reckoning.

The side are determined to try and fight their way back into the Championship and don’t want to miss out on it yet again this year. In a bid to try and ensure they don’t, Lee Johnson was shown the door.

Sunderland have since been linked to a number of names but the latest to emerge is that of Neil Lennon, who has previously managed the likes of Celtic and Bolton.

The manager is currently out of work and, according to Ian Dennis, is an ‘admirer’ of the team. Whilst no official approach looks like it has been made yet, it does appear as though the boss is keen to try and take on the challenge at the Stadium of Light.

The 50-year-old certainly has the experience of fighting at the top end of a table with Celtic but his previous EFL experience is limited and his time at Bolton was statistically the worst of his career to date.

Neil Lennon though will be determined to prove he can cut it in England – and he may yet be given the chance with Sunderland.
