31 G/A Liverpool target 'on radars for a long time'

There is ‘a chance’ that Liverpool target Cody Gakpo could depart PSV Eindhoven in favour of a move to the Premier League this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Gakpo has established himself as one of the most promising attacking talents in the Eredivisie in recent years, reportedly catching the eye of several top clubs across the continent.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International (via The Sun), Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool are all interested in snapping up the 22-year-old’s services.

It’s claimed that the Gunners attempted to sign Gakpo during the January transfer window as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s replacement, but the youngster stayed put, putting pen to paper on a new four-year contract instead.

However, that has not ruled out the possibility of an imminent exit, with PSV technical director John de Jong recently admitted that his prized asset will eventually leave the Philips Stadion one day.

“Gakpo will of course not stay in Eindhoven forever,” said De Jong. “He will go to a top club in a top league in the future. Or will that happen next summer? That’s hard to say.”

The Athletic’s David Ornstein also revealed that although the youngster’s new contract does not have a release clause, an understanding was formed to ensure that if PSV receive a suitable offer when the market reopens, they will cooperate.

Ornstein goes on to state that the Dutch giants have not set an asking price for Gakpo but offers north of £35 million have already been mentioned.
