3 things we learnt about Sheffield Wednesday after Wigan win

Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a superb result in midweek by beating title-challenging Wigan 1-0 in the league.

The Owls have been up and down this year but they’re in a good patch of form right now and that continued with a superb result over the Latics. It wasn’t an easy game but they managed to come away with the three points.

It means that the play-off and potential promotion dream for Darren Moore’s side remains well and truly on and they are now within only one point of the top six.

A decent result at the weekend then could see them leapfrog into play-off contention – and after that excellent win over Wigan, here are three things we learnt about the side.

1. Barry Bannan remains far too good for League One

Barry Bannan may not have had a fantastic game every week this year but then again, who does? When it matters, the player turns up and he does turn up most weeks for the Owls.

Even when played further back in the centre of the field or further forward in an attacking midfield type role, the 32-year-old thrives. He is not past his best in the slightest and could arguably still do a job in the second tier.

Against Wigan, he ran the show. He threatened the Wigan goal, scored the decisive penalty, ran with the ball well, created chances for his teammates and was pretty much everywhere on the field.

The opposition couldn’t get to grips with him – and Bannan has proven he is capable of winning games all by himself on his good days.

2. Sheffield Wednesday might need to mix it up in attack

Despite the win – and the generally solid performance – both Callum Paterson and Florian Kamberi struggled in front of goal in terms of challenging the goalkeeper and looking very threatening.
