3 out-of-contract players Middlesbrough should target this summer to enhance their squad
Middlesbrough still have something to play for this season as we go into the final fixtures this weekend.
They go into this weekend seventh in the league meaning they sit one place out of the play-off spots.
However, if they can get a win against Preston North End this weekend and either Luton Town or Sheffield United slip up, they can still make the play-offs and try to get promotion to the Premier League.
Regardless of whether Middlesbrough find themselves in the Premier League or Championship next season, it will be sure that Chris Wilder will want to make additions to his squad so they can either compete at the top end of the Championship or retain their place in the top flight.
With that in mind, here we take a look at three out-of contract players Middlesbrough should look at targeting this summer.
Viktor Johansson
Johansson has been with Rotherham United this year and part of the squad that has achieved promotion up to the Championship.
This season Middlesbrough haven’t had a solid goalkeeper to trust in the position. They started the season with Joe Lumley in goal but he was dropped after a poor run of form.
Luke Daniels stepped up into his space but at 34-years-old, Wilder is probably more likely to want a younger goalkeeper to be able to rely on week on week.
The 23-year-old has done well at Rotherham this year keeping 11 clean sheets in 26 appearances and given the Millers have other goalkeepers such as Josh Vickers, who has only missed out on game time this season through injury, Johansson could be tempted to move to a bigger club for more regular game time.
This would depend on the league Middlesbrough are in next season as it may be too soon for him to step up to a Premier League club but this would be a
