£25m Newcastle target would be 'good signing' for Magpies

Newcastle United should bolster their defensive options by signing Liverpool ace Joe Gomez in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Magpies were Europe’s biggest spenders in January, parting with more than £90million, but it appears head coach Eddie Howe has already set his sights on welcoming further reinforcements to St James’ Park at the end of the season.

Newcastle have reportedly joined Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the race to prise Gomez away from Liverpool.

According to Spanish sources, the Merseyside club are willing to offload the central defender for in the region of £25million.

The report suggests Newcastle are open to meeting those demands and Gomez is looking to seal his Anfield exit.

Gomez was heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa in January but a switch failed to come to fruition after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opted to reject all advances as the deadline loomed.

But Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard is known to be a ‘huge admirer’ and, as a result, it is likely he will return for the 11-cap England international at the end of the campaign.

O’Rourke believes Newcastle are heading in the right direction by targeting stars of Gomez’s calibre after becoming the richest club in world football last October.

The journalist feels the 24-year-old’s versatility would make him even more of a positive addition to Howe’s squad.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think he’d be a good signing for Newcastle.

“I think if Newcastle are looking to make that next step, considering if they do stay in the Premier League, Joe Gomez would be a good signing. He can play at right-back or centre-back.”
