2023 WWE Royal Rumble headed back to familiar location

WWE is continuing its run of stadium shows with the location of the 2023 Royal Rumble. 

Since 2019, WWE has made the move to host The Royal Rumble in stadiums, making it only the second Premium Live Show to regularly move to stadium setting, after WrestleMania. However, as reported last week, WWE are looking to add more stadium shows to its schedule for 2023, kicking-off with January’s annual event.

According to a new report from Fightful Select, WWE are in talks to return to the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas for the 2023 Royal Rumble. No date has been confirmed and the location is still not official, but it would mark a historic return to the venue for WWE. 

The Alamodome was actually the first stadium to host a Royal Rumble event, two decades before we’d see WWE move to that model again. The show, 1997’s event, featured a main event of hometown hero Shawn Michaels successfully defending his WWE Championship against Sycho Sid and the Royal Rumble match itself – won by Stone Cold Steve Austin. 

The bout was also remembered for WWE’s partnership with Mexico based promotion AAA World Wide, which saw many of their Superstars compete in the Royal Rumble match. 

Twenty years later WWE returned to The Alamodome for the 2017 Royal Rumble, which saw the epic clash between John Cena and AJ Styles for the WWE Title and Randy Orton’s second Rumble win. In fact, it was the last Rumble event not to feature a women’s rumble match. 

WWE will host three more stadium show’s this year, with Money In The Bank being held in Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium and Nashville’s Nissan Stadium hosting SummerSlam, before WWE heads to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff for Clash At The Castle on September third.
