2 Swansea City summer transfer decisions facing Russell Martin when the window opens

Swansea City look set for a mid-table finish in the Championship this season after going on a good run of form close to the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Russell Martin had a tough job replacing Steve Cooper this summer after he was involved in two straight play-off campaigns with the Swans, and his brand of football hasn’t fully worked out as planned.

However Swansea have seemingly clicked recently, which means they should be even better come the 2022-23 season.

Martin will want to add to his squad for a potential promotion push over the summer but he may also have to deal with transfer interest in some of his current squad – let’s see what transfer decisions the former Scotland international may have.

Cyrus Christie

Due to Manchester United recalling Ethan Laird mid-season and sending him to AFC Bournemouth, Martin and his transfer team had to move swiftly to bring in a replacement for the youngster, and that is when Christie arrived on loan.

The Republic of Ireland international was out of favour at Fulham but he has flourished in South Wales, scoring twice and assisting three goals in his 17 appearances.

With his contract at Craven Cottage expiring this summer, Christie will be looking towards his future and with how well he’s been playing in recent months, he will no doubt want to stick around at the Swansea.com Stadium.

That means Martin will need to convince the club to offer him a contract – unless he can find a younger and better wing-back than Christie, but he surely deserves a chance to sign permanently.

Due to the way they play football, Swansea players are often highly coveted and there has been rumours linking Flynn Downes with a move away from the club after just one season.
