16 all out! Proteas U19 Women overpower newcomers Samoa at T20 World Cup

South Africa's U19 Women thrashed Samoa by a commanding 10 wickets on Monday after bowling them out for a paltry 16 to top Group C in the U19 T20 World Cup at Borneo Cricket Ground in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Chasing a mere 17 to win, openers Jemma Botha (6*) and Simoné Lourens (6*) chased the target in only 10 balls.

It was the lowest innings total in U19 T20 World Cup history.

The Proteas won the toss and opted to bowl first, setting up a masterclass led by Nthabiseng Nini (3/4), who struck with the first ball of the innings as she bowled opener Norah Jade Salima for a duck.

It was carnage in the middle for the minnow team - playing in their first U19 World Cup - as the brilliance of Nini and Fay Cowling (2/4), Seshnie Naidu (2/0) and Kayla Reyneke (2/5) ripped Samoa apart.

Avetia Fetu Mapu and Stella Sagalala top-scored with three each in a hugely disappointing display from Samoa, whose innings ended with a run-out as they posted just 16 in 9.1 overs.

South Africa top Group C and will play their final group game against Nigeria on Wednesday (08:30 SA time).

In Saturday's opening Group C encounter against New Zealand, the Proteas secured a 22-run win (DLS method) in a rain-affected match at the newly constructed Borneo Cricket Ground.

The encounter was reduced to 11-overs per side as the Proteas laid a solid foundation with the bat with openers Botha (32) and Lourens (21) sharing a 52-run partnership.
