13 DWP benefits that could cut your Council Tax if you live with 'impairment'

Hundreds of thousands of people are missing out on a huge reduction that they are owed in their Council Tax, which can make life significantly easier and more comfortable for people living with a severe impairment. For those living in a Band D property, this could mean reducing your annual bill by £2068.

Anyone living with what is described as a "severe mental impairment" can have anywhere from 25 per cent knocked off their Council Tax bill, to having it completely discounted. But to claim this reduction, you must qualify for any one of around 13 different benefits.

These reductions even apply for people who live in the same house as someone with a severe impairment, which can help with the other day-to-day costs faced by people living with severe disability. Diagnoses that would qualify for this discount include Alzheimer's disease, forms of dementia, or other kinds of severe and enduring mental health issues that have been confirmed by a doctor.

To apply for the discount, you must supply the council with a copy of the Severe Mental Impairment Certificate that has been filled out by a healthcare professional. Alternatively, you can provide them with a copy of a benefit award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions as proof of disability.

If everyone living at the address has a severe impairment, each person must complete their own form and provide their own proof of impairment.

According to Manchester City Council, if you meet the criteria and qualify for any one of the following benefits, even if you do not claim it, you can apply for a Council Tax reduction.
