10-second glory: Shalulile's lightning-fast strike sinks Chiefs, propels Sundowns into MTN8 final

Mamelodi Sundowns secured their spot in the MTN8 final with a 2-1 victory in the second-leg over Kaizer Chiefs (3-2 on aggregate) at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Peter Shalulile netted a goal just 10 seconds into the match, setting a new record for the fastest goal in the competition's history. This achievement eclipsed Daine Klate's previous record, where he scored after 34 seconds for Bidvest Wits against Sundowns in the 2016 final.

Ashley du Preez equalised on just after the half-hour mark from the penalty spot, before man-of-the-match Shalulile coolly netted his brace seconds before half-time to ensure the Brazilians booked their place in the final on Saturday, 7 October.

After the scoreline was 1-1 a fortnight ago in the first-leg at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, the sold-out fixture in Atteridgeville was poised to be another nerve-racking match.

The venue, however, was not even near capacity when the first goal crossed the goalline.

Du Preez initiated the play by passing the ball directly to the goalkeeper and captain, Brandon Peterson. However, Peterson found himself under immediate pressure from Shalulile, and his attempted clearance was blocked.

Shalulile, the Namibian international, seized the opportunity as the ball rebounded off his leg. He then executed a left-footed finish, curling the ball into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
