Sports Budget Increased By Rs 305.58 Crore, Emphasis On Khelo India And National Youth Schemes

The country's tremendous success at the Tokyo Olympics seems to have influenced the sports budget as the central government on Tuesday allocated Rs 3062.60 crore for financial year 2022-23 -- an increase of Rs 305.58 crore, compared to the last year's amount. In the last financial year, the government had allocated Rs 2596.14 crore for sports, which was later revised to Rs 2757.02 crore. India won seven medals, including a historic track and field gold, at the Tokyo Olympics. The sporting activities have also resumed in a phased manner in the country and 2022 is an important season because of two global events -- the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Hangzhou Asian Games -- lined up.

Nearly half of all athletes for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 have now arrived in China, and over the past few days have been familiarising themselves with the 12 competition venues following their opening for training. In the mountain competition zones of Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, athletes have been testing out the cross-country skiing facilities. Nearby, lots of teams have been training in the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre. This includes Sweden, whose head coach, Johannes Lukas, told media earlier this week, as per Olympics.com: "It really is a very cool stadium and the courses are very nice. Tokyo To Host Four-Nation Gymnastics Contest Ahead Of Olympics

Tokyo will host a one-off international gymnastics tournament next month, organisers said Monday, in what could serve as a practice run ahead of the postponed Olympics. Thirty-two gymnasts from China, Russia, the United States and Japan will face off at the November 8 event -- the first major multinational sporting contest Japan has held since the coronavirus pandemic hit earlier this year. The competition, which has been under discussion for months, will have strict anti-infection measures in place. It is still unclear exactly how the Tokyo Olympics, which were forced back a year by the Covid-19 crisis to July and August 2021, will go ahead.

US Watchdog Issues Warning On Athletes' Safety At Upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics

A US rights monitor raised the alarm Monday over athletes' safety at China's upcoming Winter Olympics, after the host authorities threatened "punishment" for anti-Beijing comments. The Congressional-Executive Commission on China -- a group of Washington lawmakers and White House officials -- asked US Olympics authorities for an "urgent effort" to protect their sports stars' free speech rights at the February 4-20 tournament. The commission spoke out after Yang Shu, a senior official in the Beijing organizing committee, told an online briefing on January 18 that "any behavior or speech that is against the Olympic spirit, especially against the Chinese laws and regulations, are also subject to certain punishment."

Skier Arif Khan Eyes Top-30 Finish At Beijing Winter Olympics

Beijing Winter Olympics-bound Indian skier Arif Khan, who will participate in two events, is aiming a modest top-30 finish in the showpiece which begins on Friday. The 31-year-old Khan is the lone Indian participant in the February 4-20 quadrennial event. He secured his berth in the Winter Olympics in a qualifying event in Dubai last year. "To be honest, if you want to be a medal contender, you require at least 10 years of training and preparation, (need) to have (decent) budget and funding, only then it's possible to be in medal contention," Khan, an Alpine skier, said at a virtual interaction, organised by the Sports Authority of India, on Sunday.
