BLOCKHAUS, Italy : Australian Jai Hindley of Bora–Hansgrohe came through a packed group of riders to win stage nine of the Giro d'Italia, a gruelling 187-kilometre ride from Isernia to Blockhaus on Sunday, ahead of 2019 champion Richard Carapaz.

Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) saw off the GC heavyweights in a bruising finish on the menacing Blockhaus on Stage 9 as the Giro d’Italia exploded into life. The Australian, who wore pink for the final stage of the 2020 edition before being immediately ousted by Tao Geoghegan Hart, edged Romain Bardet (Team DSM) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) in a thrilling three-way battle, with Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) also impressing before the final sprint to the line.

Natnael Tesfatsion suffered a terrifying crash at the Giro d’Italia after he flew off the road and into the bushes during a high-speed descent on Stage 9. The Eritrean (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli) was leading from the breakaway when he got it all wrong going down the Passo Lanciano. Rather than swooping round the left-hand turn from the outside, Tesfatsion was forced to take evasive action after hugging the inside of the road.

Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) was among riders caught up in a big crash during the early stages of Stage 9 at the Giro d’Italia. The Spaniard, who started Sunday’s five-star stage ninth in the general classification, was one of six riders upended by the innocuous incident in the middle of the peloton.
