NAPLES, Italy : Thomas De Gendt claimed a fifth career grand tour stage win when he prevailed in the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia at the end of a breakaway on Saturday.

Ten years after his historic win on the Stelvio, Thomas De Gendt soared to a second Giro d’Italia stage win with an emphatic victory on the streets of Naples thanks to a little help from his Belgian compatriot and teammate Harm Vanhoucke. The Lotto Soudal duo were part of a four-man move that extricated itself from a stellar breakaway that featured the likes of Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Biniam Girmay (Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert) on the streets of Naples in an absorbing 153km circuit race that had the feel of a mini world championships.

One spectator was so concerned about losing his KOM record on Strava when the Giro d’Italia rolled into town that he rocked up with a sign pleading with the peloton to leave it alone. The cheeky fan was pictured on the side of the road during the tear-up around Napoli on Saturday with a cardboard sign declaring: «Slow down, don’t take my KOM pls». Ad/> Unfortunately for him, race organisers decided to include the ascent to Lago Lucrino in Stage 8's mini circuit, meaning there were four opportunities for pro riders to dislodge him from the top of the Strava rankings.

Why is Stage 8 going to be 'absolutely bonkers?' Ad/> Saturday sees a short, sharp Stage 8 — a 153km traipse around Napoli — that will culminate in a sprint along the Via Caracciolo seafront after four laps of a 19km circuit between Bacoli and Monte di Procida. It contains 2,130 metres of climbing over an undulating terrain, so should be one for sprinters who are not averse to a little bit of climbing. Adam Blythe, speaking on The Breakaway, described the stage as «absolutely bonkers».
