India vs England 5th Test: Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow slam unbeaten hundreds as England beat India to level series 2-2

Jonny Bairstow (114*; 145 balls, 15x4, 1x6) and Joe Root (142*; 173 balls, 19x4, 1x6) and their unbroken partnership of 269 in just 52.3 overs helped England chase down the highest ever fourth-innings total on English soil on a heady Day Five in Birmingham on Tuesday. The result denied India a series win, that looked possible at the end of Day Three when they were 257 ahead with seven wickets left and had clinched seven sessions out of the nine played. That happened because England were both “braver” and “better” than India, especially on the last two days. And they had two in-form, class batsmen, who, armed with clarity in the dressing room, were prepared to play their strokes, which negated a quality seam attack. Bairstow, who scored his second hundred of the match and his sixth in his last eight, having scored only six in the previous 79, was named man of the match. Root, England’s talisman and perhaps the best batter in the world now, took home the man-of-the -series honours with 737 runs and four hundreds at a stunning average of 105.28. His nine Test tons are the most that any player has scored against India.

Wimbledon: Norrie faces alien challenge as he reaches first Grand Slam semi-final

Over the last two decades, British fans have become accustomed to being taken on five-set rollercoaster rides on tennis' most famous stage by four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Tim Henman and then twice champion Andy Murray. The South African-born Norrie joined that select group on Tuesday when he fought back to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final with a 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Goffin. "Pretty crazy to be sitting here and in the semis. Crazy atmosphere, as well. Definitely enjoyed it. The crowd definitely got me through it. Pretty fortunate to get through that one," admitted Norrie after becoming only the fourth British man in the Open Era to reach the last four at the grasscourt major. "At end of the fourth, start of the fifth, I was just locked in.... just a crazy day and crazy match to get through."

Wimbledon: Rafael Nadal charges on despite injury concerns as Simona Halep eyes semis

Rafael Nadal has shrugged off fresh concerns over his fitness as he targets a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Wednesday. The 36-year-old Spaniard played his last-16 clash at the All England Club on Monday against Botic van de Zandschulp with strapping across his abdomen. Only last month, he won a 14th French Open with his troublesome left foot anaesthetised before undergoing career-saving treatment. "I'm a little bit tired to talk about my body, all the issues that I am having," said Nadal. "I prefer to not talk about that now. "For the moment I am healthy enough to keep going and fight for the things that I want." Nadal is halfway to the first calendar Grand Slam by a man since Rod Laver in 1969.
