PARIS: Novak Djokovic will take to Court Philippe Chatrier in Wednesday’s French Open night session under fire for his recent comments about clashes in Kosovo, after world number one Carlos Alcaraz also plays in the second round. Amid the long-standing protest by ace Indian wrestlers, who have alleged that their complaints against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh have been largely ignored, the global governing body of the sport - United World Wrestling (UWW) - has released a statement on the issue. In the statement, issued on Tuesday, UWW has urged authorities to carry an impartial probe on the allegations. They have also called for election in the WFI, failing to do which may lead to the national body's suspension.
Some of India's top wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, along with World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat on Tuesday tweeted that they are going to immerse their medals in river Ganga. They complained that despite allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, no action is being taken against him. The wrestlers even went Haridwar to immerse their medals but later shelved that plan to consign their medals in Ganga after much coaxing from the locals.
A day after videos from the National Capital showed wrestlers being shoved, pushed, pinned down to the ground and dragged into buses - triggering outrage across the country - Abhinav Bindra has reacted on the issue. On Sunday, tension escalated when the wrestlers, led by Vinesh Phogat and her cousin Sangeeta Phogat, attempted to breach the security barricades set up by the police. Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics, said that he is saddened by the developments.
India's top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, had planned a protest outside the new parliament during its inauguration in the National Capital on Sunday. The athletes had organised a 'Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat' (women's assembly) as part of their ongoing protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. However, as they were trying to march towards the new Parliament from their site of protest at Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police detained the protesting wrestlers.
