Manchester City came away disappointed from Saturday's Community Shield meeting with Liverpool, as City ended up on the losing side in the showpiece fixture for the second consecutive season.
Aymeric Laporte will miss the start of Manchester City's Premier League title defence after the Spain defender had surgery on a knee injury. City manager Pep Guardiola revealed on Friday that Laporte needed the operation after struggling with the injury in the closing stages of last season. The 28-year-old centre-back played through the pain barrier to help City win their fourth Premier League title in five seasons after a dramatic final-day victory against Aston Villa. "Laporte is injured. He had knee surgery after last season, playing the last two or three games with an important injury. He made an incredible effort to do that but he could not continue," Guardiola told reporters.
Chelsea offer Werner to Real Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Real Madrid have been offered striker Timo Werner by Chelsea. They would ask for 35 million euros for the forward, or start with a loan deal that could be converted for the same fee, with an additional loan payment. However there are doubts that Werner would take on the transfer if he was to be back-up to Karim Benzema.
Manchester City are exploring alternative left-back options in the transfer market as Brighton still insist on a £50m transfer fee for Marc Cucurella.
However good Josh Wilson-Esbrand was in pre-season, Joao Cancelo was always going to start for Manchester City against Liverpool in the Community Shield, as the only senior option who can play on the left.Cancelo was mostly reliable, as was to be expected, although Liverpool didn't take long to target the right-footed left-back, who has a tendency to come inside wherever possible.
Brighton have walked away from talks with Manchester City over the potential transfer of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella, following frustration with City's negotiating tactics, according to The Athletic's Andy Naylor. Cucurella, who joined Brighton from Getafe in 2021 for a fee in the region of £15m, is valued at £50m by the Seagulls. Manchester City were made aware of the valuation when they first expressed interest in the player, and Brighton have been clear that there will be no negotiation on their side.
