CWG 2022: "Be Angry, Be Frustrated": What India Women's Hockey Coach Janneke Schopman Told Team After Semis Loss

"Be angry, be frustrated, you have every right but move on and settle down before crucial bronze medal match," was chief coach Janneke Schopman's mantra after Indian women's hockey team lost in a controversial shoot-out against Australia in the Commonwealth Games semi-final. And her words of wisdom seemed to have worked like magic as a wounded India beat New Zealand 2-1 in the shoot-out after 1-1 in regulation time to clinch a CWG medal -- a bronze -- after a hiatus of 16 years. The Indians were undone by a horrendous stopwatch faux pas by technical officials in the shoot-out against Australia, which they eventually lost 0-3 following a 1-1 stalemate after 60 minutes.

CWG: India Eye New Zealand Scalp In Women's Hockey Bronze Medal Match

The India women's hockey team would look to put the horrendous 'clock' controversy behind its back while eyeing a podium finish when it takes on New Zealand in the bronze medal match in the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. A timekeeping faux pas by a technical official during the penalty shootout robbed India's opportunity as Australia beat the Savita Punia-led side 3-0 from one-one-situation. Both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

"Girls Are Really Upset": India Women's Hockey Coach Janneke Schopman On Clock Error In CWG Semis vs Australia

"Frustrated and angry" by the 'clock howler' during the Indian women's hockey team's controversial Commonwealth Games semifinal loss to Australia, coach Janneke Schopman said her side was left deflated and lost momentum after the incident. The Hockeyroos set up the gold medal clash against England after a controversial 3-0 win over India on penalties on Friday. During the shootout, Australia's Rosie Malone missed her shot but to the dismay of the Indian team and fans, the forward was given a second chance as a technical official, B Morgan of England, had failed to start the clock on time.
